Whether you’re relocating, refreshing your home with new furnishings or appliances, you are likely going to have to rid yourself of old furniture somehow. Disposing of large, unwanted items is difficult since you can’t simply kick them to the curb. That old ripped up the couch, the refrigerator that doesn’t cool anymore, or the old grandma’s chairs taking up space in the basement. Can you just throw them out next to the container and expect waste management to make it disappear?
Many people have asked this question while renovating their houses, in the midst of replacing the plumbing system. The trash that doesn't fit in the garbage bin was everywhere and the projects were piling up. Hire move in and move out cleaning services that can take care of everything so you don't have to carry a heavy load or worry about it. We will take you through additional tips to help you rid yourself of old furniture. We promise these tips will save you some of the time and hassle of worrying about how to dispose of bulk waste.
If you have to pay a fee of any kind, it should be a last resort if none of the below options work for you.
1. Find out if your local scrap yard accepts large items
Find out if your garbage company accepts oversized items. Then you can simply place them at the curb on designated trash day. They usually don’t, but in some areas, you might get lucky and they will take bulk scrap to the dump. Try to find that info on their website. But if their website is non-existent or not detailed enough, you can always call. What you don’t want to happen is leave a couch on the curb only to have the collectors simply pass by it. Then you’ll just have to drag the item back to your property.
Sometimes you can call and schedule a special bulk pickup to rid yourself of old furniture
But the price point for this will be at around $50-$75 which is not something you should pay, especially if you declutter annually. Sometimes they’ll even take bulky items placed on the curb, but never appliances or anything with electrical parts. In some places, you can pay to rid yourself of old furniture by your waste management. They would pick it up on your normal collection day at $10 per item. But, it is only for easily disposed of things like mattresses, tables and so on.
You also have private companies that specialize in garbage removal. Again, though, this is a service with that costs probably more than you will be willing to pay.
2. If you’re replacing the old with the new, ask if the old stuff can be hauled away
If a company will be delivering new furniture or appliances to your address, many times those guys are willing to haul away the old stuff at no extra charge. This is usually the practice with large appliances like refrigerators, laundry machines, etc. Be sure to ask them or read the fine print with arrangements of Hawaii moving companies. You can even call the company before delivery to see if they can make any special allowances. This arrangement is less likely when it comes to furniture deliveries, but if you offer cash to delivery guys maybe you can talk them into taking the old stuff.
3. List the item online, no matter what they look like
This is our favorite way to rid yourself of old furniture. No matter how old and icky your old stuff maybe, you wouldn’t believe what kind of things you can sell online. This is a way to save money while movingor renovating. Be warned, ironically, if you list things for free, you’re more likely to get irresponsible people. They could not show up to pick up the item or never return your emails. Anecdotally, it’s probably for the better to put a price on things — even if you are listing an old toilet that only kind of works. Set the price very low though. This has become our first choice for getting rid of bulky items that cannot fit in a trash bin. List the oversized stuff on Craigslist and Facebook, and maybe even make a few extra bucks on it.
If you can deliver them to a local scrap yard, you may even get paid.
4. To rid yourself of old furniture, kick it to the curb - with a “free” sign on
If you are an urban dweller in a very busy town, the easiest way for you to rid yourself of old furniture is to leave it out on the curb with a “free” sign on. By the time you come back inside to check on it from the window, it will be gone.
However, this trick doesn’t always work. It can definitely be useful at times, but only with certain items. You actually only want to do this with reasonably-sized items. Armchairs, cupboards and cabinets, moderately-sized tables, etc. If you put something bigger than that on the curb, people driving by won’t be able to load it in their vehicle. It rarely happens that people walking by can pick up a large item and carry it for blocks and blocks to their home when they were on their way to a date or something like that.
Drivers passing by is what you’re going for. You also want a high-traffic location for the same reason.
When you use this tactic, you can only try to give it a few days, if not less. Anything more and you’ll be tagged for life as the neighborhood outside. If you’ve left something out on the curb and it didn’t help getting rid of old stuff, try another tactic after 1-2 days.Scrap yards are another good option for anything composed of metal, but yet again, you’ll probably have to pay a small fee to get your large junk items picked up.
5. In order to rid yourself of old furniture, the most beautiful way is to donate it
In order to rid yourself of old furniture in large cities, try asking at your local thrift shops like Goodwill, Salvation Army, Arc, and others. They pick up donations for free, but only if they’re in good condition. That old toilet that only sort of works is not acceptable. But Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore will even take appliances, toilets, etc.We appeal to your good judgment here. Don’t use Goodwill as a dump site. Only call them if you have something that’s in good shape and could help someone.
Our experience with Wailea movers could not have been better. They were in constant contact with us through the whole experience. The men they sent to move us were efficient, knowledgeable, And did a very good job. I would use them again and recommend them to anyone that needs their services..
From start to end everyone was so helpful super through and answered all our questions. They really made us feel comfortable and made the moving transition so easy. Will recommend everyone to Wailea Movers!
I chose Wailea Movers because after my inquiry their response was quick and very informative. I actually felt comfortable enough to stop my search. Once I was ready, I called back and booked it. It was great because my move date changed and I needed to reschedule and there was no issue at all, and no fee to change my move date. The movers came when expected and worked so hard that I felt guilty. They were friendly, professional, and quick. I have moved so many times in my life, and this was clearly the best experience I've had with any moving company.Edward was super quick to respond to my inquiry, and gave me a very accurate and fair cost estimate. He was friendly and patient with me as it took me a few days to actually book the date. The whole experience from start to finish exceeded my expectations
Top notch company! Starting with Edward who came out to our locations to get us a cost estimate. Then accommodating us having to change the move date. The crew who came to move us (Ka’u, Alan, Rico, and Michael) were the best of the best. Super attentive to what needed to go and what needed extra care. Very efficient! They packed up both locations before lunch which is amazing. Awesome crew for sure! Definitely recommend this company to anyone looking to move. They took care of everything so I didn’t have to worry about shipping out stuff. I’d give them 10 stars if I could!
My move recently was not the largest or most involved but these guys treated it in the same regaurd as a huge estate. Everything from start to finish was freindly and professional. Edward was very patient scheduling the service and Alan was not only efficient but also conserned and aware of protocol. Both were great to work with and made the job of moving more of a pleasure than a burden. Highly recommend to anyone. Thanks again guys.
Great group of very hard and dedicated movers! They communicated well, showed up as expected and worked fast while ensuring our household goods were well taking care of. Highly recommend them!
By far the best moving company I’ve ever worked with. Professional, friendly and the movers took great care in moving our things. I highly recommend Wailea Movers, they are worth it!
Awesome experience with Wailea Movers and Storage! From the initial contact with James and Edward, they are so friendly and accommodating, even when we had to move our move date 3 times on them! Alan and Rico came and did our move this morning! Nicest guys and even helped us put everything back together! Great team!!!
Wailea Movers moved me a few years ago. They were so patient and just so GOOD, from the scheduling and communication to the move to paying a great price; all flawless. That’s why I called them for this move; flawless again! Exceptional and professional service with a price that’s still great, and moving me in challenging circumstances: road washouts and detours during the second round of the Kona Low storms. It’s nice to know there’s someone we can count on during a time when prices are insanely high and service at times can be abysmal. I ❤️ you guys! Mahalo nui.
All parts of my interactions with this company were ON-IT, professional, knowledgeable, and courteous. When I let them know we would handle the packing ahead of the moving date, I was emailed helpful videos showing me how to pack all the categories of items as the pros would do it. Additionally, the moving team I was provided with were careful, thorough in protecting all the pieces, and just plain enjoyable to have in my home. Highly recommend!
We used Wailea Movers during our family’s cross-country move from Maui to Kansas City, and I can honestly say the two guys who showed up were absolute pros. This wasn’t just a simple “load a couch” job. We were shipping our entire life off island, coordinating port delivery, container loading, tight timelines, and the emotional chaos of a big family relocation. These guys showed up calm, strong, efficient, and dialed in.They treated our belongings like they were their own. No rushing. No careless stacking. No attitude. Just focused, high-level execution. They were respectful to my wife and kids, careful in tight spaces, and moved with purpose the entire time. You can tell when someone takes pride in their work, and these guys absolutely did.If you're in Maui and need movers who are professional, reliable, and actually care, Wailea Movers is the move.Mahalo for helping us start our next chapter the right way. 🤙
I enjoyed very excellent service from Wailea Movers, starting with Edward, who took my order and followed through with.date changes down to Alan and Ryko, who delivered my new hot tub. I would definitely use them again.
Great to talk with these guys on the phone. Very helpful and knowledgeable and they care about moving quite a bit. James is a true moving connoisseur. Thanks again for all the help!
Edward and the moving did a phenomenal job. I would use them again. The communicated very well, worked fast, and treated all of my stuff with care. Thank you

Wailea Movers made my recent move from my apartment in Napili completely stress free and I can’t recommend them enough. Ka’u and Riko were absolutely outstanding from start to finish – they showed up on time, worked quickly, and handled all of my furniture and boxes with so much care and professionalism. They were friendly, efficient, and checked in with me throughout the day to make sure everything was going exactly where it needed to go, which made the whole process smooth and easy. You can tell they take pride in their work and represent Wailea Movers’ high standards and aloha spirit in the best way. If you’re moving anywhere on Maui or off island, I’d 100% use Wailea Movers again – huge mahalo to Ka’u and Riko for a true 5-star experience!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Mahalo Wailea Movers!!! Excellent service and friendly crew. Made our move back to the mainland smooth and easy. Crew took extra care with all our precious items. Highly recommend them for your next move!
Can’t say anything except “No Ka Oi”!!!! Our experience from the very beginning starting with Ed our sales representative and estimator, to Alan and Rico was the best. Ed was personal, professional and knew his business. Excellent. Alan and Rico worked like they cared about what they were doing, being cautious and safe with our valuables . Working quickly but cautiously . I would expect to find our things arriving safely to their destination due to their expert attention and skills. Mahalo!!!
Excellent service from the beginning. Edward provided a competitive quote for moving belongings from Maui to Arizona, complemented by exceptional, professional packing by Alan and Rico. Highly recommend Wailea Moving and Storage.
